How to Descale a Keurig (Step by Step)
A scaly Keurig brews slow and weak. Here is the quick step-by-step to descale it and clear the descale light.
How often
Descale roughly every 3 months, or whenever the DESCALE light comes on — more often with hard water.
Step by step
- Empty the reservoir, remove any water filter, and make sure there is no pod in the machine.
- Fill the reservoir with Keurig descaling solution — or equal parts white vinegar and water (Keurig tolerates vinegar far better than espresso machines do).
- Run the largest brew size into a mug (no pod), discarding each, until the reservoir is empty.
- Let the machine sit for about 30 minutes to let the solution work.
- Rinse: refill with fresh water and run several brew cycles until the water runs clear and odour-free.
If the descale light stays on
- Run an extra rinse cycle or two — residue can keep it triggered
- Some models need a button press/hold to reset the light after descaling (check your manual)

FAQ
Can I descale a Keurig with vinegar?
Yes — unlike espresso machines, Keurigs tolerate a white-vinegar-and-water mix well. Just rinse thoroughly afterwards with several plain-water cycles to remove any taste.
How often should I descale my Keurig?
Every 3 months as a default, sooner with hard water, or whenever the descale light comes on.
