How to Descale a Keurig (Step by Step)

A scaly Keurig brews slow and weak. Here is the quick step-by-step to descale it and clear the descale light.

How often

Descale roughly every 3 months, or whenever the DESCALE light comes on — more often with hard water.

Step by step

  1. Empty the reservoir, remove any water filter, and make sure there is no pod in the machine.
  2. Fill the reservoir with Keurig descaling solution — or equal parts white vinegar and water (Keurig tolerates vinegar far better than espresso machines do).
  3. Run the largest brew size into a mug (no pod), discarding each, until the reservoir is empty.
  4. Let the machine sit for about 30 minutes to let the solution work.
  5. Rinse: refill with fresh water and run several brew cycles until the water runs clear and odour-free.

FAQ

Can I descale a Keurig with vinegar?
Yes — unlike espresso machines, Keurigs tolerate a white-vinegar-and-water mix well. Just rinse thoroughly afterwards with several plain-water cycles to remove any taste.
How often should I descale my Keurig?
Every 3 months as a default, sooner with hard water, or whenever the descale light comes on.
