How we research & test
We try to be honest about what we know and how we know it. Here is exactly how CoffeeGearHQ evaluates espresso machines and grinders — and what our verdicts do and don't claim.
Our approach in one line
Every review is a research-led synthesis — built from long-term owner experience and trusted expert coverage — with hands-on testing marked explicitly wherever it applies. We don't pretend to have personally tested every machine on the market, because that wouldn't be true.
What goes into a review
- Hands-on use — where we own or have used a machine, the verdict says so directly.
- Long-term owner consensus — we read widely across owner reviews, Reddit threads, forums and retailer reviews to surface the quirks and reliability patterns that only show up after months of daily use.
- Expert & specialist coverage — we weigh the findings of established coffee reviewers and specialty retailers.
- Verified specifications — we collect each model's real specs and normalise them across brands so comparisons are like-for-like.
What our ratings mean
Scores run 0–5 and weigh the things that actually shape your daily cup and your years of ownership: grind and extraction quality, build and longevity, steaming, ease of use, and value at the price. A 4.5 budget machine and a 4.5 prosumer machine are judged against very different expectations — the rating is always relative to what you pay.
“Hands-on” vs “research-led” — why we label it
A lot of the internet quietly implies first-hand testing that never happened. We won't do that. When a verdict is based on our own use, it's labelled. When it's a synthesis of many owners and experts, we say that too. Both are useful; pretending one is the other is not.
How we choose “best” lists
Our roundups are tiered, not ranked by commission. We pick a clear winner for each real use-case (best overall, best for beginners, best value, best to grow into) using the same criteria above, and every pick links to its full review so you can check our reasoning. No brand can pay for a place on a list.
Prices and specifications
Specs are checked and normalised, but coffee gear is updated and rebadged often — so if you spot a discrepancy, tell us. Prices change constantly, so rather than quote a number that goes stale, we link you to the retailer's live price, which is always the source of truth.
Independence, updates & corrections
CoffeeGearHQ is independent and reader-supported — see our affiliate disclosure and editorial standards. We revisit reviews as models change, and we fix errors quickly. Found something wrong? Get in touch and we'll correct it.
