How to Descale a Nespresso Machine (Original & Vertuo)
Nespresso machines scale up too. Here is how to descale Original and Vertuo models safely, step by step.
How often
Descale roughly every 3 months, or after about 300 capsules — or whenever the descaling alert shows. Sooner if your water is hard.
Step by step
- Empty the capsule container and drip tray.
- Fill the water tank with Nespresso descaling solution mixed with water per the kit instructions.
- Enter descaling mode (the button combination varies by model — check your manual).
- Run the descaling cycle into a large container until the tank empties.
- Refill with fresh water and run the rinse cycle, then repeat the rinse once more.
- Exit descaling mode and wipe the machine down.
Original vs Vertuo
- The entry combination differs by line and model — Original machines typically use a button hold, Vertuo uses a lever + button combo
- Always check your specific model's manual for the exact descaling-mode steps
